Staged towards the end of the Third Month, Genji has arranged a formal visit to Murasaki's spring garden, an occassion to view the cherry blossoms ‘at their smiling best’and an excuse to see the alluring Murasaki herself, an unsuitable marriage prospect because of her birth and rank, but Genji's favourite none the less.
